What is insomnia: Causes, Effects and Treatments

What is insomnia?

In simple terms, the meaning of insomnia is a common sleep disorder. This disorder varies from person to person; some people struggling with insomnia find it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, others find it difficult to go back to sleep once they wake up and do not feel rested even after sleeping a considerable amount. There are two types of insomnia: acute or chronic, either lasting for up to a month or then at least a month.

What causes insomnia?

There are several causes of insomnia, such as stress, depression, jet lag, chronic pain, etc. Often, certain events in our life cause anxiety, and depression such as the sudden sickness or death of a family member or the loss of a job. The stress of examinations and workload at jobs also causes high levels of tension which causes insomnia. Additionally, there are several medical conditions such as nasal block and sinus allergies, acid reflux, thyroid disease, and chronic pain which can cause insomnia.

What are the symptoms of insomnia?

Here are some symptoms of insomnia:

  • Difficulty falling asleep at night
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Waking up early
  • Irritability
  • Poor concentration, focus, and memory problems
  • Problems in coordination
  • Frequent headaches
  • Acid reflux
  • Excessive worrying
  • Increased risk for depression and anxiety
  • Daytime fatigue or sleepiness

What are the long-term effects of insomnia?

Sleep is essential for our bodies just like food and water. If our body and mind do not get the rest they require, it can have several determinantal effects on us in the long run such as:

  • A higher risk of health problems like high blood pressure, obesity, and depression
  • A higher risk of falling and slipping
  • Trouble focusing
  • Anxiety
  • Grumpiness
  • Slow reaction time that can lead to a car crash

Does insomnia cause headaches?

The same brain regions and chemical messengers impact sleep and headaches; thus, inadequate or poor-quality sleep increases the odds for headaches. Insomnia in specific results in a cycle of sleeplessness which makes a person more prone to headaches. 100% has the best natural cure for headaches induced by insomnia. Our Headache Ease can help the muscles relax and ease discomfort naturally. Featuring Frankincense, Chamomile, and Rose, the blend helps inhibit muscle contractions on the head and neck while stimulating blood flow. Roll the blend onto your temples, neck, and shoulders for headache ease.

What are some tips to overcome insomnia?

  • Use the bed only for sleeping (no reading, TV, eating, or working in bed).
  • Go to bed only when sleepy and do not force yourself to sleep.
  • If unable to fall asleep in 15-20 minutes, get out of bed to do something relaxing until sleepy. Do not lay in bed and hope to fall asleep as it can cause anxiety- further worsening your insomnia.
  • Establish a standard wake-up and going to bedtime and make sure to set a healthy sleep schedule that you follow carefully.
  • Avoid daytime napping as it is more likely to keep you up at night.
  • Avoid eating or drinking right before bed to ensure you do not feel bloated and heavy.
